I need to take a day off from a long piece on the ole blog today. I am recovering from a root canal gone wild and am swollen and sore. Believe it or not, I was up at “2:30″am last night taking pain pills and trying to rest. My life is a dad joke…
Having teeth hurt and not feeling up to writing even makes me think of dementia. If you recall from articles waaaaay back numbered in the first 50-100, mom had an awful time with her teeth (dentures). (Put in “dentures” and “false teeth” in the search box on the side of the home page…you’ll see them.) The more folks I visit with at the Cornbread table, this appears to be a common situation. Sadly, keeping track of dentures, sharing with others (eek), and breaking them and not being able to tell anyone they are broken are common problems. Please, as distasteful as the task may be, be sure to assist with maintaining these false chompers as long as you can. Soak them, clean them, and protect them until they become a moot point and unnecessary. This is one of the many activities of daily living that can slip through the cracks, but one that really matters for a good quality of life. I wish I had a cure for you so we wouldn’t have to talk about such…
But for now, I am going to take another pain pill and get some rest. Thank you for your patience and please keep fighting with me to #EndALZ . 🙂
Update: Nothing much new with mom. My sister got to see her Sunday. Her eyes were matted nearly completely matted shut. That has seemed to happen more and more lately. I am not sure if a med is affecting her tear ducts or it is the 20+ hours of sleep doing it, but it is sad. They cleaned up her eyes with my sis there until she could see again. Another issue is non-specific pain. Mom is clinching her arms a lot these days and occasionally grimacing. (Mid-section pain?) They gave her pain meds to help, but, short of showing where the pain is and what its cause, it is hard to work through. Mom has been denture-free for a long time and tends to chew on rags and other things, probably because she can’t figure out what is different with her mouth. Very challenging times…but the pain is the main concern (and the wheezing every few days). Such is the many-tangled monster you deal with in dementia. 🙁
Runnin’ Til I’m Purple Update: My root canal derailed the preparation from Thursday through probably tomorrow or Wednesday. No worries…I will Crawl Til I’m Purple if that’s what it takes. 🙂 37.5 miles is a long ole way…
