Posted Halloween 2019
I hope you have a wonderful Halloween and/or Reformation Day today! Mom had a nice day yesterday. I got to spend a couple hours with her and, while she wasn’t as happy as she usually is, she wasn’t sad and ate well. Today I meet with her care team for an update. I will fill you in Monday. I am going to take the next 3 days off to celebrate my 29th wedding anniversary after this little thought:
Alzheimer’s is hard on a caregiver’s relationship, even in the case of a super strong one like ours. I knew mom for 15 years before I knew my wife. She brought me into this world and did innumerable things for me day-in and day-out through my formative years. It is extremely hard to explain feelings like this in a way that helps your spouse help you…but try. Be empathetic. Extend grace further than normal. Offer to listen early and often. Be patient. Most of all, love your caregiving loved one and know that you are appreciated in your caregiving role too even if he/she doesn’t tell you. This season, for better or worse, will pass.
I will see you all Monday!
