Like they have many times in my last few years, a song by the Christian group Mercy Me has provided some salve on my soul. The song this time is one of their slightly older ones: Hold Fast
Hold Fast
To everyone who’s hurting
To those who’ve had enough
To all the undeserving
That should cover all of us
Please do not let go
I promise there is hope
Chorus:
Hold fast
Help is on the way
Hold fast
He’s come to save the day
What I’ve learned in my life
One thing greater than my strife
Is His grasp
So hold fast
Will this season ever pass?
Can we stop this ride?
Will we see the sun at last?
Or could this be our lot in life?
Please do not let go
I promise you there’s hope
(Chorus)
You may think you’re all alone
And there’s no way that anyone could know
What you’re going through
But if you only hear one thing
Just understand that we are all the same
Searching for the truth
The truth of what we’re soon to face
Unless someone comes to take our place
Is there anyone?
All we want is to be free
Free from our captivity, Lord
Here He comes
(Chorus)
Help is on the way
Hold fast
He’s come to save the day
What I’ve learned in my life
One thing greater than my strife
Is Your grasp
So hold fast

So much of this modern song hits the bull’s eye of our patients and caregivers/family/friends. I have been asked many times how I can stay positive through this challenge. A couple things come to mind:
- Mom has it much worse than I do.
- I know help is on its way for mom and the Sweet 17. Help may be a cure. Help may be a treatment. Help may be only found in the land where there is no dementia. Therefore I and they will stand fast.
- I know God loves us and cares about our plight.
I am not wanting my blog to be overly preachy, as such, although I will be happy to spend as much time as you need on the phone, email or in chat to help you understand Christianity. I am not better than you. I am a mess like everyone else, but I am a forgiven mess. Please remember, Easter season is upon us. Churches are more inviting than ever this time of year. Lean on Christ in your time of need. Read the Bible. 1 Corinthians 15 is a good chapter to learn about the background of the faith although any of the first four books of the New Testament are also beautiful accounts of Christ’s life and the Easter season too.
Let me leave you with these short, helpful videos:
Why is Easter so big of a deal to Christians:
Thank you for indulging me, fellow strugglers. This disease is a frustrating and faith-challenging mess to be sure. But friend, hold fast…help is on the way!
