Mom was a wound-up mess today. She is saying inappropriate, unmentionable things a lot these days. 🙁 She was worried about her stuff that was in the boat and needed to show me the boat…and took me to a food cart. She then threw up her hands and said “never mind”. 🙁 Most of the Sweet 17 (+2 now) were a mess too. I am not sure if it is the buzz about losing a friend yesterday or the snow or what, but lots of folks were extremely atypical, even for Alzheimer’s patients. The normally sweet Mrs. B yelled multiple times (scary violently) at another resident. Cups were getting knocked around, sad folks happy, happy folks sad.
This may be another similarity of Alzheimer’s folks and very young kids…angst breeds angst. Behavior changes behavior in others. Surprises are seldom helpful in the short run. Emotion breeds emotion.
On a brighter note: One of my favorite ladies reminded me today that “Behind every great man is a great woman”. She also told me a Bible verse that was important to her from the Psalms… Then she warned me that the snakes (lots of them) are back in the hall and to “watch out!”. I told her that it was quite cold and I would move them carefully. She was satisfied, and moved on. 🙂
Another interesting phenomenon in mom is her mixing food. She has always been weirdish in her food taste, but putting a cookie in her potato soup and mixing her brown mush with her orange mush was odd even for her. But she eats it all…generally. I think her taste buds are declining and it takes more effort to generate a taste that she understands.
Tomorrow my uber-brave sister and my stepdad take mom to get her second eye procedure. If that works out well, she will have balance visually again. Last time, if you recall, the first eye procedure worked despite mom getting tired and frustrated and nearly harming her eye trying to “leave” early. Pray this one is smooth. It will really help her. 🙂
Not a great day with the Sweet 17+2 or with mom, but she will always be my mom. #EndALZ
