I have mentioned several times throughout my blog the amazing, well-timed sense of humor my mom possesses, even in the throes of this stinkin’ disease. Whether it be a stress-breaking raspberry or a belly laugh, mom’s still got it! It is so heartbreaking and life-giving all at once in our visits to see her. In this last week of slightly more cogent visits, she has been in rare form! I asked her if she likes my beard, a straggly, more-salt-than-pepper porridge of face hair of the homeless sandwich-board genre, and she replied, not hesitating, “Sure! Do you like mine???” and pointed at a little, tiny stubbly spot on the side of her chin. Then we both erupted into a belly laugh that almost brought me to two-reasoned tears. Mom so wants us to be happy and not be sad for her that she somehow keeps those pathways unblocked from time-to-time to bring us joy. Comedy, and a loving heart, is not what she does, it is who she is…
My recommendation to you is simple: cling to these memories. I pray that each of you get some happy mixed in your day. Good times seem to progress and regress in this fortress of illness, just like in other areas of life. Share the good stuff with others! Multiply the joy! When times are hard…and they will be….tell someone! Divide sorrow! The net results of sharing your journey are better than they would be just holding them in.
Update: Mom has been great all weekend. I look forward to hanging out with her tonight. Always an adventure visiting the memory unit. 🙂 Just when you think all is “getting better”, you get a surprise. I wonder what tonight will hold?

As always, I love your stories tried-and-true!
