Preface: I am as far from Mom’s boss than I could ever be…even now.
Mom worked outside of the home off and on, but more steadily when her kiddos required less supervision in our teen years. As I have mentioned in previous articles, she also worked for temp agencies so she would have the flexibility. She worked extremely hard at work and at home. If I was her boss, in a professional or industrial setting, this is how I would give her her yearly review:
“(Mom) is a true self-starter. She was an extremely fast learner with minimal supervision. If she comes up against a task that is hard, she not only figures it out, she sets a standard that others adopt. She works hard and is extremely loyal. She never gives up. She is “full steam ahead”. The only caveat is that her kids come first… and she makes that clear. However, the goods so far outweigh the bads that she is invaluable. Give that woman a huge raise!!!”
How mom got that way I am not 100% sure. She was a country girl, as I mentioned in my favorite article to date. I am sure her improv skills were partially learned there. Raising two rambunctious Applegate boys and a somewhat ornery Applegate girl surely helped as well. She is a fighter and “finds a way”.
Maybe this is an odd way of proving this character trait, but she taught herself to draw and doodle. Here is an example of one of her first attempts to draw:
I have posted her doodles before elsewhere. She decided she wanted to draw…and she just did it. No lessons that I know of. Maybe art class in the 1950’s? Maybe. Amazing woman, my mom. 🙂 I sure wish learning to kick this disease’s butt was as “easy” as mom learned other things. 🙁
Stinkin’ disease!

Update: Mom had another good day yesterday. I will be by to see her again later today. It is a highlight of my day every single visit!
