Posted Disco Day, 2020 (aka 9/21/20)
Death has climbed in through our windows and has entered our fortresses; it has removed the children from the streets and the young men from the public squares. – Jeremiah 9:21
Happy Disco Day to all! I hope your weekend went well! 🙂 Mine was fine, but things didn’t go as planned, to say the least. More on that later…
First, you may ask…where do you get Disco Day, blog boy? Well, my family MAY be the only one who celebrates Disco Day, but we do. Why September 21st? Here ya go, from the quintessential Disco Dynamos (Earth, Wind & Fire):
Here are the lyrics to this gem:
Do you remember the
21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember how the stars stole the night away
Ba de ya – say do you remember
Ba de ya – dancing in September
Ba de ya – never was a cloudy day
Ba duda, ba duda, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda
My thoughts are with you
Holding hands with your heart to see you
Only blue talk and love
Remember how we knew love was here to stay
Now December found the love we shared in September
Only blue talk and love
Remember the true love we share today
Ba de ya – say do you remember
Ba de ya – dancing in September
Ba de ya – never was a cloudy day
There was a
Ba de ya – say do you remember
Ba de ya – dancing in September
Ba de ya – golden dreams were shiny days
The bell was ringing, aha
Our souls were singing
Do you remember
Never a cloudy day
There was a
Ba de ya – say do you remember
Ba de ya – dancing in September
Ba de ya – never was a cloudy day
There was a
Ba de ya – say do you remember
Ba de ya – dancing in September
Ba de ya – golden dreams were shiny days
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
De ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Ba de ya de ya de ya
Such a feel good song! Disco was like that. Most of the famous songs from this much loved and equally hated genre were positive and upbeat. Regardless, the Applegate house loves us some Disco and every September 21st we play some Earth, Wind, & Fire and we chase the clouds away!
But, you know, not everyone shares this love of disco. On Thursday, July 12, 1979, the innovative ownership of the Chicago White Sox baseball club decided to celebrate the end of disco’s reign as the genre of a generation by holding what their marketing geniuses called “Disco Demolition Day“. They combined cheap tickets, cheep booze and an encouragement by a local media outlet to bring in vinyl copies of disco music to destroy as part of the promotion. Here is a recap of how it turned out:
The field was largely destroyed. Fans and police were hurt. Sure some disco vinyl was destroyed, but the event was not as planned and was a disgrace. Unforeseen consequences abounded, largely because of poor planning…
Saturday was our Walk to End Alzheimer’s. We were all nearly late because we were unaware of road construction. Once we finally unloaded and got started, time was short. I should have planned better for potential tech concerns and, when the Promise Garden ceremony was set to begin, I was still scrambling trying to figure out how to access it online on a set of bleachers at the park we walked near. Everyone waited with patience….and finally, just as the intro ended I got it to appear on the iPad. We didn’t have our Promise Garden items, our 2020 T-Shirts, or a megaphone…but we did have the right spirit.
Was the event a fiasco like Disco Demolition Day? Nope! We had a great walk because we didn’t give up. We took lots of pictures and told our stories and did the best we could. Here are some of the proofs:
Life is just this way…. We have no idea what will come our way. How many folks, when asked in 2015 “Where do you see yourself in 5 years” would have guessed this? Not many…if even one. While we are NOT in charge of our destination, we ARE in charge of our attitude along the way. Was this year’s walk ideal? Not if ideal only means “it worked as planned”…but, in my book, it was just right. 🙂

Update: Mom is 3-4 days into her positive COVID-19 diagnosis. So far all is well as far as symptoms, but the key timeframe will be this week. Please pray for mom and the Sweet 17 this week more than ever. She is a brave soldier fighting this stuff…and I couldn’t be prouder of her…nor could I be prouder of my little walk team. 🙂
WW (Weight Watchers) Update- I haven’t officially weighed in this week, but I can assure you I had a loss. I worked hard, ate right, exercised, and I feel like there will be a good result. Could it not go as expected? It could be…I may have gained…but I did get healthier this week regardless.
Thank you all friends. Thank you for walking. Thank you for donating! Thank you for NEVER giving up! We will beat this thing!
See you Friday 🙂
